From 'historic' deals to climate protest: Top moments that defined COP28 in Dubai

KhaleejTimes

All 198 Parties to COP28 reached a historic agreement on Wednesday to quicken climate action. Over the last two weeks, terms like “global stocktake,” “climate justice,” “moving away from fossil fuels to reach net zero,” “the 1.5°C North Star,” “shuttle diplomacy,” “orderly energy transition,” “fixing climate finance,” and more have dominated headlines.

But at Khaleej Times, we cut through the technicalities and gave our readers relatable stories that would motivate them to take action. Beyond the data, talks, technical studies, debates, and plenary sessions, our reporters were able to convey the atmosphere and viewpoint of real people present at the UN Climate Summit.

There have been accusations that the nation had ‘planned oil agreements’ at the climate summit and had conflicting interests. The UAE has always been “clear, open, clean, honest, and transparent,” as stated by COP28 president Dr. Sultan bin Ahmed Al Jaber at the commencement. He said that “the nation has been building bridges, forming partnerships, and establishing relationships to create win-win relationships for over 50 years.”

He refuted the claims and responded to the criticism by focusing on his North Star, which is maintaining 1.5°C within reach. Additionally, in the first hour of Day 1, the Presidency enabled a historic agreement to finance and bring into operation financing for Loss and Damage in response to critics, capping up COP28 on a high note.
