UN Security Council vote to end political mission in Sudan is scheduled.

UN Security Council vote to end political mission in Sudan is scheduled.

UN: Officials stated that the country’s acting foreign minister had asked for the action earlier this month and had called the mission’s performance “disappointing.” The UN Security Council is scheduled to vote on Friday to terminate a political mission in war-torn Sudan.

A proposal to integrate forces as part of a transition from military control to civilian democracy caused weeks of building tension between the Sudanese army and paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, which culminated in a battle on April 15.

“You have two generals that completely disregard the interests of their population,” UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said in a Tuesday statement to reporters.

In response to a question on whether the African Union or the UN was to blame for the war, Guterres stated, “It’s time to call a spade a spade.” This is the fault of those who put their personal power struggles ahead of the needs of their people.

The proposed council resolution calls for UNITAMS to wind down during the following three months when its mandate expires on December 3. The 15-member council founded UNITAMS in June 2020 with the goal of aiding Sudan in its political shift to democratic governance.
