UAE: An expat who speaks Malayalam is recognized after 13 years of cleaning

In order to help her husband, who was working as a laborer in India for little more than Dh20  in UAE a day, 51-year-old Pameela Vembolamala Krishnan moved to the UAE in 2010. They could not even afford to buy basic needs, and their two children were set to start college.

Their situation made the difficult decision—leave for the United Arab Emirates, where millions of migrant workers reside—to become simple and doable.

Pameela worked at the Canadian Medical Center in Abu Dhabi as a cleaner. She has demonstrated her commitment to her profession for 13 years, and as a result, she was recognized as one of the winners of the first Emirates Labour Market Award, which took place in Abu Dhabi on Thursday, in the exceptional workforce category.

Wearing a simple white patterned dress and holding a blue and white award, Pameela proudly stood next to CEOs, industry captains, top government officials, and other employees.

Unexpected difficulties

It was a happy occasion that validated all of my years of sacrifice and hard work. Through an interpreter, Pameela, who only knows Malayalam, informed Khaleej Times that it was a day celebration. For Pameela, who has been working for pay in the UAE for more than ten years, it was truly a celebration and a personal achievement. She did not disclose her monthly income, but claimed it was sufficient to help put food on the table and give her kids a good education.
