A Saudi relief organization operation defuses 837 mines in Yemen

RIYADH: In Yemen, the demining initiative of a Saudi humanitarian organization KSrelief removed 873 mines during the third week of November.

As of right now, 51.5 million square meters of Yemeni land have been deemed secure from the devastating aftereffects of the conflict there.

During that time, 755 other unexploded ordnances and 113 anti-tank mines were deactivated by Masam demining crews.

Since the project’s inception in mid-June 2018, 422,342 mines have been decommissioned.

As of right now, 51.5 million square meters of Yemeni territory have been deemed secure from the devastating aftereffects of the conflict.

One of Masam’s continuing demining activities is in the southwest Taiz Governorate, southeast of Quddam and northeast of the strategically important town of Dhubab. During a battlefront in 2017, Houthi rebels utilized a steep mountain flank as a defensive position.

Nowadays, residents utilize the region for gathering firewood and herding sheep, however there have been stories of some herders’ animals suffering injuries or dying as a result of the mines that were buried there.
