Red Cross president meets with Hamas chief over humanitarian concerns related to the Gaza war

Geneva: On Monday, the Red Cross announced that its president had visited Ismail Haniyeh, the leader of Hamas, in Qatar “to advance humanitarian issues related to the armed conflict in Israel and Gaza.”

The International Committee of the Red Cross announced in a statement that “President Mirjana Spoljaric met with (Ismail) Haniyeh, Chair of Hamas’ Political Bureau, and separately with authorities of the state of Qatar.”

The declaration was made while talks were taking place to arrange the release of some of the 240 captives that the Islamist militants had taken during their historic strikes on Israel on October 7.
According to Israeli officials, some 1,200 individuals died in the attack—mostly civilians.

According to Hamas officials, Israel’s waning air and military campaign has killed over 13,300 people in Gaza, the majority of them were civilians and included thousands of children.

In order to promote “direct discussions with all sides to improve respect for international humanitarian law,” the ICRC emphasized that Spoljaric’s visit was a component of those efforts.
It was mentioned that she has also had meetings with key Israeli and Palestinian leaders as well as the relatives of hostages held in Gaza on several occasions in recent weeks.
