According to sources familiar with UAE government policy, the United Arab Emirates intends to uphold diplomatic relations with Israel despite international concerns over the escalating casualties in the Gaza conflict. Abu Dhabi, which established diplomatic ties with Israel in 2020 under the US-brokered Abraham Accords, aims to influence Israeli actions while safeguarding its own interests.
The mounting death toll resulting from Israel’s invasion of the Gaza Strip, a retaliation for cross-border attacks by the Hamas group, has triggered outrage in Arab capitals. UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan has condemned Israel’s actions and emphasized the need for a ceasefire and humanitarian corridors.
While the UAE has expressed frustration with Washington’s perceived lack of pressure to end the conflict, it continues to play a role in moderating public positions taken by Arab states. UAE is putting efforts in it by discussing with Israeli officials and engaging with regional leaders, such as the recent meeting between Sheikh Mohamed and Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.
Despite economic and security ties established with Israel in recent years, the UAE’s influence in reining in the Gaza offensive has faced challenges. The UAE remains committed to diplomatic ties with Israel, hosting an Israeli ambassador, with no indication of a potential break in relations. The Abraham Accords, motivated partly by shared concerns over the Iranian threat, represent a long-term strategic priority for Abu Dhabi, fostering economic, security, and diplomatic cooperation.
As the conflict unfolds, the UAE emphasizes the importance of swift resolution and calls for addressing the broader Israeli-Palestinian issue. The UAE is putting priority on promoting stability in the Middle East, and its active role as a diplomatic influencer underscores the significance of this aspect in its foreign policy approach.
