Robot-Assisted Kidney Transplants

In a groundbreaking achievement for the UAE’s healthcare sector, three UAE nationals diagnosed with end-stage renal disease underwent robot-assisted kidney transplants. This pioneering effort was carried out by Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, a member of the M42 network, in collaboration with their US-based Cleveland Clinic counterparts.

The surgeries were a joint endeavor involving Dr. Bashir Sankari and Dr. Waleed Hassen from Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, and US-based experts Dr. Georges-Pascal Haber and Dr. Mohamed Eltemamy.

Dr. Haber emphasized the significance of this achievement, stating, “This marks a significant advancement in living-related transplantation. Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi is leading the way in offering state-of-the-art, technologically advanced care to patients not just in the UAE but also in the broader region. We are proud to introduce such innovative techniques that enhance patient outcomes and save lives.”

The robotic system used for these transplants ensures precision and minimally invasive procedures. Benefits include reduced pain, minimal blood loss, smaller scars, quicker recovery, decreased infection risk, and enhanced clinical results. The system offers a 3D high-definition view of the surgical area, with robotic arms replicating the surgeon’s movements, translating them into highly accurate procedures.

Highlighting the significance of this advancement, Dr. Sankari said, “Being the country’s sole multi-organ transplant center, we consistently invest in cutting-edge technologies and expertise. The introduction of robot-assisted kidney transplantation solidifies our role as healthcare innovators, raising the bar for medical practices both locally and regionally. This offers a hopeful alternative for patients with end-stage kidney disease, paving the way for tailored care.”

It’s worth noting that in 2019, Cleveland Clinic achieved a global first with a successful robotic single-port kidney transplant. Initially designed for prostate and kidney cancer surgeries, this innovative method has been adapted for kidney transplant patients, focusing on reducing incision size and post-operative discomfort.
