RIYADH: Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman of Saudi Arabia unveiled the ambitious blueprint for the upcoming Abha International Airport on Thursday.

Designed to resonate with the rich heritage of the Asir region, the revamped Abha airport is set to become a significant landmark within the Kingdom.

The terminal’s footprint will see a dramatic six-fold increase, expanding from its current 10,500 square meters to a sprawling 65,000 square meters. The initial phase of this massive expansion is slated for completion by 2028.

Key features of the expansion encompass the addition of passenger boarding bridges, cutting-edge self-service amenities for a smoother travel process, and expansive parking capabilities.

The airport’s design will be a testament to the Asir region’s architectural essence, offering a glimpse into Saudi traditions. Travelers can anticipate a unique journey marked by top-tier efficiency and uninterrupted services.

In terms of capacity, the airport is gearing up to host over 13 million passengers each year, marking a substantial leap from its existing 1.5 million capacity. Additionally, flight operations will triple, with the airport accommodating over 90,000 flights annually, up from the current 30,000.

Travelers will be greeted with 20 gates and an impressive 41 check-in counters, supplemented by seven state-of-the-art self-service check-ins.

The revamped Abha airport is not just an infrastructural marvel but is also poised to boost tourism in the Asir region. Furthermore, it aligns perfectly with the Asir development blueprint and the broader aviation strategy, echoing the goals of Saudi Vision 2030. This vision includes enhancing air links to a staggering 250 destinations and ferrying 330 million passengers.
