The UAE has accepted the announcement of the United Nations for the victorious operation of unloading oil from the decaying tablet FSO Safer from the coast of Yemen in the Red Sea.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs applauded the efforts of the United Nations, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, the Coalition to Restore Legitimacy in Yemen, and donor countries for the support offered to promote the procedure to unload oil from the decaying tanker, which safeguards the region and the world from an environmental and humanitarian catastrophe.
Moreover, the UN said on Friday that, to prevent a potential environmental tragedy, it had completed the carrying away of more than 1 million barrels of oil from the decaying supermarket on Yemen’s Red Sea coast.
However, UN officials and activists have been alerting for years that the whole Red Sea coastline was at risk, as the rusting Safer tanker could have ruptured or exploded, spilling approximately four times as much oil as the 1989 Exxon Valdez tragedy of Alaska.
