Getting to the station and onward to a final destination is often the hardest part of a train trip. A new partnership aims to take the guesswork out of it.

Etihad Rail has partnered with Citymapper, its parent company Via, and transport operator United Trans so that customers can plan journeys across the UAE through the Citymapper app. The announcement was issued on 27 October and has been widely reported today.

What passengers can do

Citymapper lets users view and compare journeys that combine Etihad Rail services with metro, bus, on-demand transport and other options. In practice, someone travelling from a Dubai neighbourhood to Fujairah can see how to reach the station, which train to catch and how to continue after arriving.

One distinction matters. Customers will continue to book and manage their rail journeys through the Etihad Rail website and app, and use Citymapper to plan connections across the wider network. Citymapper is a planning tool, not a ticket counter.

Why the operator is doing it

Adhraa Al Mansoori, Executive Director of Commercial and Support at Etihad Rail Mobility, said that as the network expands, the company wants planning a train journey to feel simple and clear. She said working with partners like Citymapper supports the experience beyond the rail journey itself and makes it easier for people to choose public transport.

Chris Snyder, Chief Operating Officer at Via, said passengers increasingly expect transport networks to work together as one experience.

A young network

The partnership arrives early in the life of the passenger service. The UAE’s national passenger rail network launched on 30 September, with services linking Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Al Dhaid and Fujairah. A new station in Liwa is expected to open in November, ahead of the Liwa festival.

Earlier announcements pointed in the same direction. When Etihad Rail first unveiled plans for the integration last year, it described a vision of multimodal trips combining rail with metro, bus, on-demand transit and micromobility in a single app. Today’s launch is the practical result.

Why first and last miles matter

Rail only works well when the rest of the journey does too. Many passengers will not live next to a station. They need a bus, a metro line or a taxi to reach it, and they need the same on the other end. If the connection is confusing, drivers may decide that taking the car is easier.

The UAE has set out goals to increase public transport use. Tools that show a complete journey, with timing and options, address one of the main barriers: uncertainty. A traveller who can see a reliable connection at both ends is more likely to try the train.

What to watch

Several questions remain open. How closely will the app follow real-time conditions on Etihad Rail’s own services? Will fares appear alongside routes? Will more transport operators join as the network grows? The partners have not published answers to these yet.

For regular users, the immediate advice is straightforward. Keep the Etihad Rail app for tickets, and try Citymapper to see how a trip fits together. As the network adds stations and services, the planner will likely become more useful.
