A National Push to Make AI Part of Every Classroom
The UAE has approved the rollout of an artificial intelligence curriculum across every public and private school in the country, marking one of the most ambitious efforts yet to embed AI literacy into mainstream education from an early age.
The decision was announced following a Cabinet meeting chaired by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. Under the new curriculum, students will be introduced to core AI concepts, including how data is collected and used, how algorithms function, and the practical applications of the technology in everyday life. 22,000 Teachers to Be Trained
Rolling out an AI curriculum nationwide requires more than new textbooks — it requires educators who are comfortable using the technology themselves. To that end, the Cabinet also reviewed a dedicated capability-building programme aimed at training 22,000 teachers and educators across the country.
The goal, officials said, is to equip teachers with the skills to use AI as a support tool across multiple parts of their job: designing lessons, marking and assessing student work, analysing curriculum effectiveness, and encouraging a broader culture of innovation among students. Sheikh Mohammed framed the initiative as a response to how quickly technology is reshaping the classroom experience, arguing that teachers must now see themselves as lifelong learners in order to keep pace.
He warned that continuing to teach students using outdated methods risks leaving an entire generation unprepared for the world they will graduate into — a message that underscores the urgency behind the government’s push.
Building on an Already-Tested Pilot
This is not the UAE’s first attempt at introducing AI into schools. According to the Cabinet, a pilot version of the curriculum has already been trialled and evaluated in public schools, with officials reporting encouraging early results. That pilot appears to have given the government the confidence to scale the programme up to a full national rollout covering both public and private education sectors — a far larger and more complex undertaking given the number of curricula, boards and school operators active in the UAE’s private education market.
Sharing the Model Internationally
In a move that signals the UAE’s ambitions extend beyond its own borders, the Cabinet also approved a mechanism to make its AI curriculum and supporting materials available to other education ministries and the wider international education community. This positions the UAE not just as an adopter of AI in education, but as a potential exporter of its own curriculum model — part of a broader pattern in which the country has sought to position itself as a global leader in applied artificial intelligence policy, from government services to, now, classrooms.
Part of a Wider AI Strategy
The schools initiative did not emerge in isolation. It was unveiled alongside other Cabinet decisions relating to AI, including the establishment of new AI-powered advisory tools intended to support government decision-making. Together, these moves reflect a deliberate, multi-track strategy: embedding AI not only in how the government itself operates, but in how the next generation of Emirati and resident students are educated from the outset.
