Yahya Sinwar, the Head of Gaza, is Hamas's New Political Leader

After his predecessor Ismail Haniyeh was assassinated in Tehran last week, causing a sharp spike in tensions in the region, Hamas named Gaza Strip chief Yahya Sinwar as its new political leader on Tuesday.

“The selection of leader Yahya Sinwar as the head of the political bureau of the movement” was declared in a statement released by the organisation. The Ezzedine Al-Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of Hamas, claimed to have fired a flurry of rockets towards Israel from the Gaza Strip shortly after the announcement.

Sinwar is one of the most wanted people in Israel because the military and government there believe he was a mastermind behind the attack on October 7. Less than a week has passed since Haniyeh’s death in Tehran, at which point he was named the new leader of Hamas. Israel has been held accountable by Iran and Hamas for his murder. Regarding the killing, Israel has remained silent.

1,198 people, primarily civilians, were killed in Hamas’s October 7 attack, according to an AFP count based on official Israeli figures. Terrorists also took 251 people during the assault; 111 of them are still being held captive in Gaza, 39 of whom are believed to be dead by the military. According to the Gaza health ministry, at least 39,653 people have died as a result of Israel’s retaliatory military campaign in Gaza.
