Dubai Will Outlaw Single-Use Bags on June 1st. Shoppers Use Reusable Bags and Hold Their Purchases in Their Hands

Shoppers in malls and supermarkets were observed acclimating to Dubai’s ban on single-use plastic and paper bags today by purchasing reusable bags, pushing carts, and carrying items in their hands.

On June 1, a ban on single-use bags was implemented throughout Dubai; retailers are not required to provide free substitutes.

“We were unaware of it until we read about it in the news. We chose not to purchase the bags that were on offer at the counter because this initiative benefits the environment. Our goal is to alter our behaviors. Thus, on June 1st, while shopping at Deira City Centre, I loaded everything into the cart and got it into our car,” said Faiza Idrissi, an Al Garhoud resident.

Faiza continued, “We will be carrying our own bags whenever we go shopping. This is a lesson for us.”

From the start of this year, companies were required by the emirate to charge single-use plastic bags 25 fil. It is advised that customers bring their own reusable carriers.

Shopping bags are something that Ghada El Masri, a hospitality executive at The Serve Hub, frequently carries and keeps in her car. However, I had to park my car across the street because I had an appointment at the hospital today. I was unable to bring my bags with me because of that, Ghada, a customer at the Al Ghurair Mall in Deira, explained.
