After Striking Flamingos in India, an Emirates Aircraft Sustained Damage; the Return Trip was Cancelled

Several migratory birds were killed when a Dubai-Mumbai Emirates plane collided with a flock of flamingos just before landing; an airline representative told News Times on Wednesday. The aircraft sustained damage as a result.

The spokesperson verified, “The aircraft landed safely, and all passengers and crew disembarked without injury.”

“The return flight EK509, which was supposed to depart for Dubai on May 20, was canceled due to damage sustained by the aircraft in the incident,” the spokesperson continued.

The event took place on Monday.

Emirates stated it is “cooperating with (Indian) authorities on the matter.” Emirates is based in Dubai. “A replacement aircraft was arranged for all passengers, and the passengers and crew of flight EK509 were accommodated overnight before the flight departed Mumbai on Tuesday, May 21 at 9 p.m. (India time).”

Indian media reported that the incident claimed the lives of at least 36 flamingos, but wildlife experts expressed concern that many more may have perished.
