OIC and GCC Applaud UNGA Vote Supporting Palestine's Application for Full Membership

The UN General Assembly adopted a historic resolution on Friday, with a resounding majority, which stressed that Palestine’s state is eligible to become a full member and grant it additional rights. The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) welcomed this development.

The OIC said in a statement that this resolution reflected a global agreement to support the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, such as independence, freedom, justice, and self-determination, and that the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories that it has occupied since 1967 must end.

According to the statement, it reaffirmed its unwavering support for Palestine’s state’s legitimate rights in expressing its political and legal position at the UN, alongside all other states of the world, as a development that has been needed for decades.

In addition to the official recognition of 144 states of Palestine’s state, which has full membership in dozens of international organisations and agreements, it referred to the historical, legal, and political rights of the Palestinian people to their land as confirmed by the pertinent UN resolutions.

Jassim Mohammed Al-Budaiwi, the secretary general of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), meanwhile, praised the UN General Assembly’s adoption of a resolution endorsing Palestine’s right to full membership in the organisation and its suggestion that the UN Security Council take another look at the Palestinian bid.

The secretary-general of the GCC noted that the resolution’s vote by 143 nations demonstrated support for the Palestinian people’s right to recognition and their belief in that right, allowing the State of Palestine to fulfil all of its obligations within this international organisation.
