The city of Sharjah declared on Monday that it will no longer produce single-use plastic bags, so all manufacturers are forced to stop production.
This choice comes after the emirate-wide ban on single-use plastic bags and materials that went into effect on January 1, 2024. Under the ban, retailers were instructed to cease dealing in, manufacturing, supplying, and importing single-use plastic bags and materials.
Single-use plastic bags can be exported or reexported outside the United Arab Emirates as long as a prominent label indicates that the production was done with export or reexport in mind. However, trading these products on domestic marketplaces is forbidden.
