McDonald's will Repurchase Israeli Eateries in Response to Boycotts

Following its Israeli franchise’s distribution of thousands of complimentary meals to Israeli soldiers, the fast food behemoth faced criticism. McDonald’s reported that it and franchisee Alonyal had agreed to bring back 225 locations.

The Israel-Hamas conflict was stated to have “meaningfully impacted” business in January.

Widespread demonstrations impacted sales in France, Indonesia, and the Middle East.

Over 30 years have passed since Alonyal, owned and run by chief executive Omri Padan, began operating McDonald’s outlets in Israel.

Because McDonald’s operates under a franchise system, individual operators are authorized to manage restaurants and hire employees. Following declarations from Muslim-majority nations like Pakistan, Malaysia, and Kuwait distancing themselves from the company, a boycott of McDonald’s was launched.

A McDonald’s franchisee claimed on social media that it had “donated and continues to donate tens of thousands of meals to IDF units, the police, hospitals, residents around the strip and all rescue forces” in the days following the Hamas attacks on Israel in October of last year and the Israel Defense Forces’ (IDF) retaliation.
