RIYADH: A US Navy ship intercepted and destroyed an anti-ship ballistic missile and a drone that the Houthis had fired against international vessels in the Red Sea on December 28, according to information released by the US military on Friday.
The US Central Command (CENTCOM) stated in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter that the guided-missile destroyer USS Mason shot down the missile and drone, which were fired from Yemen on December 28 between 5:45 and 6:10 p.m. (Sanaa time).
“There was no damage to any of the 18 ships in the area or reported injuries,” according to the post.
CENTCOM estimated that this was the 22nd strike by the Yemeni militia, which is supported by Iran and holds a significant portion of the country.
A multinational maritime security coalition commanded by the United States and gathered in the Red Sea in reaction to Houthi attacks on international shipping includes the USS Mason.
Since October, the Houthis have assaulted commercial ships in the Red Sea, claiming they are headed to Israel or have ties to Israel, as a show of support for the Palestinians in Gaza.
However, shipping authorities asserted that the attacks had become indiscriminate, compelling several international shipping companies to circumvent the Red Sea canal and instead travel the lengthier route around Africa.
