US KC-135 Tanker Crash in Iraq Kills All 6 Crew, Military Confirms Mid-Air Collision Possible

Baghdad, Iraq — A United States military aerial refuelling aircraft crashed in western Iraq during operations linked to the ongoing conflict with Iran, killing all six American service members on board. The aircraft, a Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker, went down during a mission supporting US military operations in the region, according to US officials.

The incident occurred on March 12 when the KC-135 was flying in what the US military described as “friendly airspace” over western Iraq. Initially, authorities reported that four of the six crew members had died while rescue teams searched for the remaining personnel. However, US Central Command later confirmed that all six crew members had lost their lives in the crash.

Officials said the aircraft was part of ongoing American military operations supporting strikes against Iran and its allied forces in the Middle East. The KC-135 Stratotanker is a critical aircraft used by the US Air Force to refuel fighter jets and other military planes mid-air, allowing them to extend their range and remain in combat zones for longer periods.

According to the US military, two KC-135 aircraft were involved in the incident. One of the planes crashed while the other was able to land safely after sustaining damage. Early reports indicate that the accident may have involved a mid-air collision between the two refuelling aircraft, though officials have said the exact cause is still under investigation.

Authorities were quick to clarify that the crash was not caused by hostile action. US Central Command stated that there was no evidence of either hostile fire from enemy forces or friendly fire from allied units. This means the crash likely resulted from a technical malfunction or an operational accident during the mission.

The crash took place amid escalating tensions and military activity across the Middle East. The United States and its allies have been carrying out strikes against Iranian missile and drone infrastructure since late February, while Iran and Iran-backed groups have launched retaliatory attacks across the region.

The loss of the KC-135 also highlights the risks involved in aerial refuelling missions, which require aircraft to fly in close proximity at high speeds and high altitudes. These operations are considered among the most technically demanding tasks in military aviation.

Reports indicate that the crashed aircraft had taken off from an air base in Israel and was participating in refuelling missions over Iraq as part of the broader US-led campaign in the region. The identities of the six crew members have not yet been released, as authorities are waiting to notify their families.

The tragedy has further increased the toll of American casualties in the ongoing conflict with Iran. Since the hostilities escalated, several US service members have been killed and many more injured during combat operations and related incidents.

Military investigators are now examining flight data, communications records and wreckage from the crash site to determine what exactly went wrong. Officials say the findings will be crucial in preventing similar incidents in future operations.

The crash marks a significant setback for the US military presence in the region and underscores the dangers faced by service members conducting complex air operations during wartime. As the conflict with Iran continues to intensify, the incident serves as a reminder of the high risks associated with modern aerial warfare and support missions.
