United Arab Emirates (UAE) President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan extended his heartfelt condolences to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan following a tragic attack by the PKK terrorist organization, which resulted in the death of nine Turkish soldiers. The empathetic gesture was conveyed during a phone conversation between the two leaders, where they also reaffirmed their united stance against terrorism. This information was shared by Turkish diplomatic sources, who did not divulge more details.
The PKK’s attack occurred on Friday at Turkish military outposts located in northern Iraq, leaving nine soldiers dead and four wounded. In response to this attack, Türkiye’s top officials, led by President Erdoğan, held a crucial security meeting on Saturday in Istanbul. The meeting’s outcome, as stated by the country’s Directorate of Communications, emphasized Türkiye’s determination to continue its fight against terrorism until the last terrorist is neutralized and the regions in Iraq and Syria are cleared of terrorist activities.
The PKK, known for using northern Iraq as a base for plotting cross-border attacks into Türkiye, also operates a Syrian branch under the name YPG. In response to these ongoing threats, Türkiye initiated Operation Claw-Lock in April 2022, targeting PKK hideouts in Iraq’s northern regions close to the Turkish border. This operation followed the earlier Claw-Tiger and Claw-Eagle operations launched in 2020, aimed at rooting out terrorists based in northern Iraq.
