UAE: Hundreds Detained During a 24-Hour Raid as Global Cybercrime Networks Were Dismantled

During an all-night operation throughout the United Arab Emirates, major cybercrime syndicates were dismantled, leading to the arrest of hundreds of cybercriminals and the rescue of numerous individuals. The operation comes after the racket was uncovered by a Khaleej Times investigation.

On Wednesday, special forces conducted one of the biggest operations in Ajman, raiding the Grand Mall and multiple residential towers that were being used for cybercrimes. Hundreds of suspects were taken into custody during the late-night and early-morning operation. Their roles are being investigated, and the public prosecutor will be notified of those involved.

Recently, a similar crackdown was carried out throughout Dubai, with the largest raid taking place at Rahaba Residences in Dubailand. Numerous South Asians and Africans were among the thousands of people who fell victim to the cyber syndicates.

Within the scam centres, the Khaleej Times investigation exposed a rigid hierarchy, with telesales agents at the bottom and “killers”—experienced hackers—at the top. The Khaleej Times was informed by a telesales agent that their handlers called them “opening batsmen.”

“We’re the ones who would make the first call, initiate conversation, and assign people simple tasks like posting Google reviews and liking YouTube videos,” she said. “Our handlers monitored our calls to ensure we followed the script that appeared on our computer screen.”
