UAE Demands That Businesses That are "Smoke-Free" Discipline Offenders

The smoker must first receive written notice of the company’s tobacco-free workplace policy.

The health ministry of the United Arab Emirates has urged businesses that have “tobacco-free” policies to discipline staff members who disobey their smoking ban policies. The smoker must first be served with a written notice and informed of the company’s tobacco-free workplace policy, as per the Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP).

According to the MoHAP, “there must be a record documenting the violating person’s name as well as the incident location, timing, and consequences.”

This coincided with the ministry’s publication of an employer guide on tobacco-free workplaces. Tobacco use in any form is forbidden in “tobacco-free facilities.” It is not permitted to smoke anywhere on the premises, including outside and in parking lots, at such public and private organizations.

Smoking is prohibited in closed public areas by UAE law. The guide prohibits the use of tobacco in any form in any public place, including places of government, health care facilities, educational institutions, public transportation, and other public areas.

The ministry has suggested that the professional performance document include the tobacco-free policy initiative as a “integral part.”

“We recommend developing and implementing written procedures for a facility to be tobacco-free.”
