UAE: Certain Indian Schools have Declared a Three-Day Weekend.

UAE: Since Republic Day falls on a Friday this year, many Indian schools in Dubai will have a three-day weekend.

On January 26, India will celebrate its 75th Republic Day, and many Indian-curriculum schools in the United Arab Emirates are getting ready to celebrate with gusto. In the meantime, parents have received circulars from several Indian-curriculum schools in the Emirates alerting them that the schools will be closed on this particular day. Some Indian schools have proclaimed a three-day weekend.

In India, November 26, 1949, is recognized as Republic Day, a public holiday honouring the passage of the Constitution, which became formally operative on January 26, 1950. Republic Day was chosen on January 26, 1930, when the Indian National Congress issued the Declaration of Indian Independence. This choice has historical importance.

If January 26 is a holiday, those observing it will celebrate the day on Wednesday or Thursday.

The 75th Republic Day was observed at Gulf Indian High School in Dubai on January 24, 2024, with pride and reverence, according to Mohammed Ali Kottakulam, principal. Our students gave a succinct yet moving presentation about the years leading up to the Jallianwala Bagh massacre in 1919—a pivotal moment in modern Indian history—and how we overcame all obstacles to win our freedom in 1947.
