The use of psychotropic substances is strictly prohibited in the United Arab Emirates. But two years ago, it changed the law (Article 30) to include first-time drug offenders’ rehabilitation.
The Judicial Court of Abu Dhabi uses social media today to remind citizens of the consequences of abusing psychotropic drugs and prescription opioids.
The number of times the offense has been committed is reflected in the list of penalties.
Offenders who violate the law will receive a three-month prison sentence and a fine of at least Dh20,000 up to Dh100,000. Should this occur twice, the offender faces a minimum six-month prison sentence and a fine ranging from Dh20,000 to Dh100,000.
The severity of the punishment for a third offence is determined by how long the drug was abused. There is a maximum fine of Dh100,000 and a minimum of one year in jail. The Federal Decree Law No. (30) of 2021 on Combating Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances includes this list of penalties as part of its legal framework.
