The World Court has Ordered Israel to Take Action to Guarantee that Food Enters Gaza Unimpeded.

On Thursday, the International Court of Justice’s judges unanimously directed Israel to take all necessary and practical steps to guarantee that the Palestinian population in Gaza receives essential food supplies as soon as possible.

The ICJ stated that famine and starvation are spreading and that the living circumstances for Palestinians in Gaza are becoming worse.

In their ruling, the judges noted that “the court observes that Palestinians in Gaza are no longer facing only a risk of famine but that famine is setting in.”

In January, Israel was given an injunction by the International Court of Justice (ICJ, often called the World Court) to ensure that Israeli troops do not commit any acts that could be considered violations of the Genocide Convention against Palestinians in Gaza.

The court upheld the January measures in its ruling on Thursday. Still, it also stated that Israel needed to take steps to guarantee that Palestinians in Gaza could continue to receive humanitarian aid and necessities, including food, water, and electricity, as well as medical supplies and treatment.

The judges continued, “By increasing the capacity and number of land crossing points and maintaining them open for as long as necessary,” this may be accomplished. A month after the decision, the court mandated that Israel provide a report outlining how it had affected the ruling.
