The UAE is Among the Top Countries for Women in Parliament, According to an IPU Report.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has been ranked fifth in the Inter-Parliamentary Union’s (IPU) “Women in Parliament 2023” report, indicating substantial progress toward gender parity. This annual global research, which looks at parliamentary renewals in 66 chambers across 52 countries in 2023, demonstrates nations’ progress toward gender balance in political representation.

Rwanda leads the IPU’s international rankings, with women holding an impressive 61.3% of seats in the Chamber of Deputies. Cuba and Nicaragua follow closely, with women accounting for 55.7% and 53.9% of legislative seats, respectively. The report also mentions parity in Andorra, Mexico, and the United Arab Emirates, a significant step forward in these countries’ efforts to achieve gender equality.

The worldwide landscape indicates a good trend, with women accounting for 27.6% of MPs in freshly elected or appointed chambers in 2023. This represents an increase of 1.4 percentage points above prior polls in the same countries. Overall, the global share of female MPs has climbed to 26.9%, a 0.4 percentage point gain from the previous year. Despite the slower growth rate compared to the more substantial rises in 2020 and 2021, the rising trend demonstrates gradual progress in women’s parliamentary representation.
