Tesla delivered its first Cybertrucks on Thursday, four years after introducing the futuristic vehicles.
A delivery event was live-streamed from Tesla’s gigafactory in Austin, Texas. CEO Elon Musk drove the vehicle on stage in the dark before climbing into bed to discuss it.
“It’s the most unique thing on the road,” he explained. “Finally, the future will look like the future.”
The Cybertruck is aimed at the most profitable segment of the US automotive market, which is now dominated by Ford, General Motors, and Ram’s Stellantis.
Customers paid a $100 deposit to reserve their Cybertruck when the vehicle was first introduced. Mr Musk stated on a conference call last month that over one million customers had reserved the car. In 2019, Mr Musk stated that the Cybertruck would cost $39,990, but Tesla announced on Thursday that the vehicle would start at $60,990.
During the conference call, Mr Musk also said he wants to “temper expectations” on the vehicle’s production. The company expects to begin producing 250,000 Cybertrucks “sometime in 2025″.
The Cybertruck seats six passengers and features a touchscreen navigation center. It has 43cm of ground clearance to drive off-road and can go from 0kph to almost 100kph in 2.6 seconds.
