Apple has outlined a comprehensive strategy to remove some of the obstacles to competition that it has erected around its profitable iPhone franchise, but the new options that will become available to customers and app developers will initially only be available in Europe.
The statement on Thursday coincides with Apple’s preparations for impending European rules that would grant users the option to utilize other app stores and give developers previously unheard-of ways to avoid paying fees that have grown to be a lucrative business for the internet behemoth.
Most notably, Apple, for the first time, will allow iPhone users in Europe to use app stores other than the company-operated one that comes installed on the mobile device. It will also enable developers to offer alternative payment systems that could help them make more money while potentially lowering their prices.
But Apple says it fears opening up the iPhone to outsiders will also increase the chances that consumers venturing outside its proprietary system will be exposed to hackers and other security problems.
