Slovak PM's Prognosis is Positive, and the Suspect Appears in Court

The suspected gunman made his first court appearance on Saturday, and Slovakia’s health minister announced that Prime Minister Robert Fico’s prognosis following an attempted assassination was “positive”.

Since Wednesday, when a lone gunman shot him four times, including once in the abdomen, Fico has been admitted to the hospital.

At a hospital in Banska Bystrica, in the centre of Slovakia, he had surgery for five hours on Wednesday and two hours on Friday.

The two-hour procedure yesterday helped to improve the prime minister’s health prognosis, Minister Zuzana Dolinkova informed reporters.

“The prime minister’s condition is stable, but despite this it’s still serious,” she stated.
The 71-year-old poet Juraj Cintula, who has been identified by Slovak media as the suspected gunman, showed up on Saturday morning at a special penal court in Pezinok, northeast of the capital Bratislava.

Cintula was accused of a planned murder attempt, and the prosecutor requested on Friday that he be placed in pre-trial custody. The court is currently reviewing the prosecutor’s request.

Walking towards his supporters following a government meeting in the central mining town of Handlova, Cintula fired five shots at Fico, striking him four times.
