The Honorable The Supreme Council member and ruler of Sharjah, Dr. Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, has authorized the digitization of 30,000 rare books and manuscripts kept in the Joanina Library of the Portuguese University of Coimbra, which is recognized as one of the most significant historical libraries in the world and is included in the UNESCO World Heritage. The grant totaling €7.9 million will be used for this purpose.
This is a big step forward for international research and educational prospects.
Through the digitization effort, rare and historical knowledge sources that would not have been widely accessible would now be available to scholars, readers, and researchers worldwide.
Scholars will be able to easily find and examine these sources because the project will make use of modern technological choices to enhance research activities in a variety of sectors of knowledge. This donation demonstrates the Sharjah Ruler’s dedication to advancing information exchange and supporting academic endeavors inside and outside the Arab world.
