Rockets Launched at a US-led Coalition Facility in Syria from Iraq

According to Iraqi security officials, rockets were fired late on Sunday from northern Iraq against a military base in Syria that is home to a coalition led by the United States.

A fighter jet from the coalition fighting ISIS in Iraq “destroyed a launcher in self-defense after reports of a failed rocket attack” near a base in northeastern Syria, the coalition claimed. In a brief statement to the media, it added that no US personnel were injured.”

After several weeks, this is the first significant offensive against the coalition forces.

It occurs in tensions stoked by the Gaza War, days after Israel was said to have retaliated to an attack by Iran with a drone strike on the Islamic Republic.

Iraqi authorities had earlier declared that they had begun a thorough search in the province of Nineveh’s northern region and discovered the vehicle used in the attack.

According to a statement released by the Iraqi security forces at approximately 9:50 p.m. (1850 GMT), “outlaw elements of having targeted a base of the international coalition with rockets in the heart of Syrian territory.”

The statement further stated that the attack-related vehicle was set on fire by the security personnel.

The director of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, Rami Abdel Rahman, reported that multiple rockets were fired “from Iraqi territory at the Kharab al-Jir base,” which is home to US forces.

He said that the attack was planned by the Islamic Resistance in Iraq, a loose coalition of organizations supported by Iran. The majority of the attacks on US personnel, according to the group, occurred between mid-October and early February.
