According to a letter obtained by AFP on Wednesday, Microsoft has abandoned plans to become an observer on the board of ChatGPT creator OpenAI as antitrust authorities increase their examination of the artificial intelligence industry.
The $13 billion partnership with OpenAI has raised concerns on both sides of the Atlantic regarding Microsoft’s level of influence over its smaller partner.
Following an unsuccessful boardroom coup attempt against OpenAI CEO Sam Altman last year—whom Microsoft backed and briefly employed regulators started looking into the relationship.
Microsoft obtained a seat on the board as a non-voting observer following the turmoil in OpenAI, a position it is now abandoning. According to the letter, Microsoft’s withdrawal is “effective immediately”.
The letter from Microsoft to OpenAI was sent on Tuesday. “Over the past eight months, we have witnessed significant progress by the newly formed board and are confident in the company’s direction,” she wrote. We no longer see the need for our restricted observer role.
After conducting a preliminary investigation, the European Commission—the EU’s powerful antitrust regulator—came to the conclusion last month that Microsoft had not assumed control of OpenAI as a result of its investment.
