Late Kuwaiti Emir Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad’s body was laid to rest at the Sulaibikhat Cemetery on Sunday following a prayer service. The members of the Al Sabah family and the speaker of Kuwait’s parliament attended the late Emir’s funeral. Aged 86, the emir passed away on Saturday.

Draped in Kuwait’s flag, the casket of Sheikh Nawaf was buried at Sulaibikhat cemetery alongside his kin after prayers at Bilal bin Rabah mosque. The successor to the late Emir, Sheikh Mishal al-Ahmad al-Sabah, attended the funeral and was seen shedding a tear at the prayer service.

On Monday and Tuesday, Sheikh Mishal and the royal family will personally receive the condolences of people at the Diwan of Al-Sabah Family at Bayan Palace. Prominent personalities from around the world paid respects to Sheikh Nawaf. Saudi Arabia’s King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman were among the leaders to offer their condolences to Kuwait and the family.

The late Emir’s involvement in public service included minister of defence, interior, labour and deputy chief of the National Guard. Sheikh Nawaf was admitted to hospital in late November due to a medical emergency. Sheikh Nawaf was named crown prince in 2006 and took over as emir when Sheikh Sabah died in September 2020.
