Can you share the story of how you started your professional career, including any significant influences or turning points?
My journey in real estate began with a deep passion for properties and an unwavering commitment to exceptional customer service. A significant turning point came early in my career when I was exposed to property transformations, witnessing firsthand how thoughtful enhancements could elevate a property’s value and create delightful experiences for end users. This realization fueled my ambition to pursue a career in real estate.
I started as a trainee in the London real estate market, advancing through various roles, including sales, lettings consultant, property management, portfolio management, branch management, and ultimately, area director for one of Europe’s largest independent real estate companies. This diverse experience gave me a comprehensive understanding of the industry and its dynamics.
After my time in London, I moved to Africa, where I oversaw real estate developments driven by infrastructure investments. I also served as a consultant for Middle Eastern investors, offering expert advice on real estate investments. With 21 years of experience in real estate operations, project management, and transforming businesses from the ground up, I have developed the insights and skills essential for success in this sector. This diverse background has reinforced my belief in the critical importance of customer satisfaction in real estate.
Where are you now?
I am currently the General Manager and CEO of Salaam Real Estate, a leading developer based in Djibouti, East Africa. As a proud subsidiary of Salaam African Bank and a key member of the esteemed Salaam Group of Companies, our mission is to deliver exceptional real estate developments that exemplify our unwavering dedication to excellence, innovation, and, above all, our customers’ needs.
What is your track record, and which projects are you currently focusing on in Africa?
Our track record speaks volumes about our capabilities and ambitions. The successful development of Rugsan Gardens and Aragsan Village in Hargeisa, Somaliland—projects that were the first of their kind as independent gated communities—stands as a testament to our leadership in the real estate sector. These groundbreaking developments, which I had the privilege to lead and develop while serving as Director of Kaabsan Real Estate, another esteemed entity within the Salaam Group, set a new standard for residential living in the region and became a model for future projects.

Building on the success of these projects, our current focus is an even more ambitious endeavor—Salaam City. This flagship project is an affordable housing initiative designed to meet the needs of Djibouti’s public, including government workers and other essential service providers. Spanning a vast 2.4 million square meters, Salaam City will feature over 7,000 residential units alongside state-of-the-art healthcare facilities, a two-story mall, four plazas, mosques, recreational facilities, educational centers, business hubs, and beautiful parks. This comprehensive development is designed to enhance the quality of life for our residents, offering them everything they need within their community.
What are the most important duties you perform in your current job, and how do they contribute to your overall goals?
As CEO, one of my primary responsibilities is fostering a strong organizational culture centered on leadership and employee development. I believe that a well-trained and motivated team is essential for achieving our ambitious goals. I prioritize nurturing talent by implementing mentorship programs and leadership training initiatives that empower employees to grow and excel in their roles.
In addition to team development, I am deeply involved in strategic planning and decision-making processes that align with our mission of community transformation. I encourage open communication within my team, promoting a collaborative atmosphere where ideas flourish, and everyone feels valued. By cultivating a culture of continuous learning and encouraging innovative thinking, I ensure that my team is not only equipped to meet current challenges but also empowered to drive the company forward. This focus on leadership development directly contributes to our goal of delivering exceptional customer value while creating thriving communities in Djibouti.
What future developments or innovations are you looking forward to in your industry, and how do you plan to leverage them?
I am particularly excited about the potential of AI, blockchain, and virtual reality to revolutionize the real estate industry. Blockchain can enhance transaction transparency and security, while AI can provide predictive analytics to better understand market trends. Virtual reality offers immersive experiences that allow potential buyers to explore properties from anywhere in the world.
To leverage these innovations, I plan to invest in technology partnerships, train our teams in using these tools, and continuously seek feedback to integrate these advancements into our business model. This approach will position us as leaders in modern real estate practices.
How do you tackle difficult challenges in your career, and what keeps you motivated during tough times?
Throughout my career, I have faced numerous challenges that tested my resolve and commitment. My approach involves embracing these challenges as opportunities for growth and learning. I focus on my purpose—transforming lives through real estate—and use it as my guiding principle. This mindset allows me to face adversity with resilience. During tough times, I rely on a strong support network, including my team and mentors, who provide valuable perspectives and encouragement. Additionally, I believe in a culture of open dialogue, where discussing challenges leads to collaborative solutions and innovative ideas.
What is the most memorable achievement in your career so far, and what did it teach you?
One of my most memorable achievements is my first sale, which solidified my belief in the importance of being an advocate for the client. It taught me that the best sales outcomes arise from a customer-first mentality. By prioritizing the needs and desires of my clients, I was able to build meaningful relationships that resulted in three referrals, two of whom became customers. This experience underscored the power of trust and relationship-building in business, shaping my approach to real estate and reinforcing my mantra that success in real estate is a byproduct of customer obsession.
What advice would you offer to newcomers in your industry, particularly those who aspire to follow in your footsteps?
To newcomers entering the real estate industry, I would emphasize the importance of developing a client-centric mindset. Understand that real estate is not just about transactions; it’s about building relationships and creating value for clients. Embrace continuous learning—stay informed about market trends, regulations, and emerging technologies. Networking is key; connect with experienced professionals and mentors. Finally, cultivate resilience. The industry can be challenging, but a strong purpose and dedication to excellence will pave the way for success.
How do you see AI and new technologies influencing the future of your field, and what role will they play in your organization’s strategy?
AI and emerging technologies are poised to fundamentally reshape the real estate landscape. They will streamline processes, enhance data-driven decision-making, and allow for personalized customer experiences. In our organization, we plan to harness AI for customer insights, utilizing data analytics to better understand client preferences and behaviors. By incorporating these technologies into our strategy, we aim to enhance efficiency, improve client relationships, and remain at the forefront of industry innovation. This proactive approach will not only drive performance but also position us as a socially responsible developer committed to sustainable practices.

My aspirations for the future involve fostering a culture of continuous learning and innovation within my organization.
