According to Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, Italy has chosen to stop funding the United Nations Organization for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA). This announcement was made on Saturday.
The decision was made in response to claims that a few UNRWA employees were part of the assaults in Israel on October 7 that were carried out by the Palestinian militant organization Hamas, though Tajani did not specifically address such accusations.
Tajani announced on social media platform X, “The Italian government has suspended financing of the UNRWA after the atrocious attack on Israel on October 7,” noting that some of Italy’s friends had previously made the same choice.
