A surprising Hamas comeback in some areas of the Palestinian territory has caused new rifts among Israeli leaders regarding the governance of Gaza after the war, placing additional strain on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
For over seven months, the Israeli army has been fighting Hamas throughout Gaza, and along the northern border with Lebanon, Hezbollah and the Israeli army have been exchanging fire almost every day.
Yoav Gallant, the minister of defence, attacked Netanyahu personally for not ruling out the possibility of an Israeli government in Gaza following the war.
The Israeli premier’s blatant rejection of Palestinian leadership in Gaza after the war has severely strained relations with the United States, a key ally, and opened a rift among leading politicians.
According to experts, the ambiguity only helps Hamas, whose leader has maintained that no new government can be established in the region without its participation.
“Hamas will continue to grow without an alternative to fill the vacuum,” AFP was informed by International Crisis Group analyst Mairav Zonszein.
“If only Hamas is left in Gaza, of course they are going to appear here and there and the Israeli army will be forced to chase them around,” Navon stated.
Either you establish an Israeli military government or an Arab-led government.”
In a live speech on Wednesday, Gallant declared, “I call on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to make a decision and declare that Israel will not establish civilian control over the Gaza strip.”
