India Gives $1.169 Million to the UN to Support Hindi Language Promotion.

To increase the usage of Hindi in the United Nations (UN), the Government of India has contributed an astounding $1,169,746 to the ‘Hindi @ UN’ initiative. The Indian government has been working nonstop to increase Hindi’s usage within the UN. According to a press release from India’s Permanent Mission to the UN, New York, as part of these efforts, the ‘Hindi @ UN’ project was launched in 2018 in collaboration with the UN Department of Public Information with the goal of enhancing the UN’s public outreach in Hindi and spreading greater awareness about global issues among millions of Hindi-speaking people worldwide.

According to the release, India has been working with the UN Department of Global Communications (DGC) since 2018 by contributing extra money to help mainstream and compile DGC’s multimedia content and news in Hindi.

“Since 2018, the UN’s website and its Hindi-language Facebook page, Twitter, and Instagram accounts have been used to distribute UN news in the language. Every week, a UN Radio audio bulletin in Hindi with news is released.

It further stated that to carry out this project, Ian Phillips, director and officer in charge (news and media division), United Nations Department of Global Communications, received a cheque for $1,169,746 on Thursday from Ambassador R Ravindra, Cd’A & DPR.

Nearly a year ago, Melissa Fleming, the undersecretary general of the UN Department of Global Communications, received a cheque from Ruchira Kamboj, India’s former Permanent Representative to the UN, supporting the UN’s efforts to increase Hindi language usage.
