India: An Indian Army Veteran Killed in Gaza is Mourned by his Family

When Waibhav Anil Kale’s family learned of the death of the former Indian Army officer, who was employed by the UN in Gaza, a deathly silence fell over his Thane home.

While driving from Rafah to a hospital in the Khan Younis region, Kale (46), passed away.

The retired colonel’s aunt, Mugdha Ashok Kale, said in an interview with ANI that she was still finding it difficult to accept his passing. Our surprise at learning about Waibhav was profound. We’re still in shock that he’s gone. Not even that we’d seen much of him lately. But it seems like he’s still here in spirit. Our minds are not prepared to accept and come to terms with the bitter truth, even though it eventually comes to light. Waibhav is therefore still alive in our eyes,” she said to ANI.

His cousin Chinmay Ashok Kale told ANI of his lifelong commitment to service as an army officer and later as a UN staffer: “He was very active and always up to something since childhood.” In addition, he had a strong commitment to his family, making time to visit and spend time with us whenever possible. The Kale family is deeply committed to serving the country and being patriots. His grandfather had wished for him to enlist in the army. He took the test multiple times but was never able to pass it. But he never gave up and persevered until he eventually realised his grandfather’s dream of being drafted into the army.”
