Bushra Bibi, the wife of incarcerated former Prime Minister Imran Khan, is reportedly in jeopardy of facing serious legal consequences, potentially leading to imprisonment in connection with an alleged corruption case, according to a Saturday media report.
The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) is meticulously examining certain pieces of “evidence” related to financial transactions that Bushra Bibi is said to have received, as reported by The News International newspaper.
Sources suggest that the anti-graft watchdog has obtained fresh evidence that, if verified, could change Bibi’s legal status from a “witness” to an “accused.” There are indications that, in addition to being implicated by the NAB, the 49-year-old Bibi might face arrest.
Imran Khan, the chairman of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, was arrested in August of this year on charges of disclosing a secret diplomatic cable from the country’s embassy in Washington.
Simultaneously, the NAB is expediting its investigation into Imran Khan’s alleged corruption cases, specifically the Toshakhana case and the UK’s NCA (National Crime Agency) GBP 190 million, also known as the Al-Qadir Trust case.
Sources suggest that the NAB may soon conclude these investigations and make decisions regarding the filing of cases. Additionally, Bushra Bibi and her close aide, Farah Shahzadi, have been summoned by the accountability bureau on November 13 in connection with the Al-Qadir Trust corruption case, according to the Dawn newspaper.
Earlier reports on Thursday detailed alleged corruption by Shahzadi, citing government sources, claiming a significant increase in her declared and non-declared assets from 2017 to 2020, totaling a staggering Rs4,520 million.
