The first AI-driven smart taxis, boasting cutting-edge features such as an interior monitoring system, route optimization, streaming services, and more, are set to launch in the region within the next two months, according to a senior representative from Hyundai UAE.

Dubbed the Hyundai AI Smart Taxi, a silver Sonata hybrid model, representative of the Capital’s public taxis, made its debut at the Abu Dhabi Smart City Summit.

Hyundai UAE is currently in discussions with both public and private entities, including the Integrated Transport Centre (ITC) in Abu Dhabi and the Road and Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai.

Suliman Al Zaben, the director of Hyundai UAE, emphasized that the introduction of these smart taxis signifies the dawn of a new age in AI, safety, and security in the nation. “This is a pioneering AI smart taxi initiative in the region. It’s the first comprehensive taxi solution built into a vehicle, aimed at public transportation in the UAE. It embodies the synergy and collaboration between the public and private sectors,” stated Al Zaben.

Advanced Monitoring Features

Each taxi is equipped with four AI-powered cameras that oversee various aspects, such as the driver’s attentiveness, response time, and other vital safety metrics to safeguard passengers and prevent mishaps. Al Zaben highlighted, “The cameras will assess the driver’s fatigue levels. The facial recognition capability will enhance safety throughout the journey, preventing potential risks like the driver falling asleep.”

Furthermore, the AI’s integration with multiple apps will address the requirements of all taxi service providers. “The taxi features a smart meter with integrated payment mechanisms,” Al Zaben added.

Innovative Lost and Found System

A unique lost and found mechanism is integrated into the smart taxi. It can detect items left behind by passengers, capturing images and data, which are then relayed to the control center. This system alerts the driver even before the passenger exits the vehicle.

“This is a groundbreaking global lost-and-found system. If a passenger forgets an item, the system instantly notifies the taxi company’s operation room, which in turn immediately alerts the driver. This entire process takes mere moments, enabling the driver to inform the passenger promptly,” Al Zaben explained.

The taxi employs Edge computing, enhancing response times and conserving bandwidth. Inside, passengers will find two interactive displays providing details about their journey, tourist attractions, driver information, and more.

The onboard technical apparatus facilitates real-time data collection for distant monitoring, ensuring timely interventions. An integrated control and monitoring panel oversees drivers, tracks performance metrics, and prevents any misuse of the vehicle.

“This initiative marks another significant achievement for Juma Al Majid Establishment, the sole distributor of Hyundai vehicles in the UAE. It aligns perfectly with the UAE’s vision for smart mobility in the future,” Al Zaben remarked.

He concluded, “Expect to see these taxis on the streets soon. It’s set for a nationwide rollout.”
