Going back to the Middle East for tough negotiations on Gaza, Blinken

After embarking on his fourth visit of the Middle East since the commencement of the Israel-Hamas conflict three months ago, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken landed in Turkey on Friday.

According to the State Department, the senior US envoy will go to Israel, the West Bank headquarters of the Palestinian Authority, and five Arab nations: Egypt, Jordan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.

On Saturday, Blinken will meet in Istanbul with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who is among the most critical of US assistance to Israel in the conflict, as well as his Turkish colleague Hakan Fidan.

This vacation, we don’t anticipate every interaction to be simple. There are undoubtedly challenging issues in the area and important decisions must be made,” State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller told reporters.

“But the secretary believes it is the responsibility of the United States of America to lead diplomatic efforts to tackle those challenges head on,” he stated.
