Central Italy, Saturday: An overnight suspected gas explosion has resulted in the partial collapse of a building accommodating asylum seekers, leaving 31 individuals injured, as reported by firefighters.
A video released by the fire service revealed sections of the two-storey structure in San Lorenzo Nuovo, near Viterbo, reduced to rubble following the blast, which occurred shortly before midnight.
The fire service explained that there was an “explosion and partial collapse” of the building, identified as a reception centre, likely due to a gas leak.
After thorough search and rescue operations, which included the deployment of sniffer dogs, 31 injuries were confirmed. One person is in a serious condition and has been airlifted to a hospital in Rome, currently in a coma, according to the ANSA news agency.
The affected building comprised mini-apartments hosting asylum seekers, primarily men but also women without children. Additionally, a carpenter’s workshop and a wine shop adjacent to the building were also destroyed, reported ANSA.
Investigations into the cause of the explosion are currently underway.
