Live updates from the G7 Summit and PM Narendra Modi in Italy “India has considered it its responsibility to put priorities and concerns of countries of the Global South on the world stage,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated at the G7 Outreach event on Friday, reiterating the concerns and priorities of the countries in the Global South that “are bearing the brunt of global uncertainties and tensions.” He highlighted the African Union’s permanent membership in the G20, which came about during India’s G20 presidency. He went on, “We emphasized the significance of international governance in the field of AI during the G20 Summit hosted by India last year.
Arriving early on Friday, Modi made his first overseas trip of his third term to attend the outreach session at the 50th Group of Seven (G7) leaders’ summit. The session covered topics related to artificial intelligence (AI), energy, Africa, and the Mediterranean. He also had discussions on the sidelines with Presidents Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine, Emmanuel Macron of France, and his counterpart Rishi Sunak of the UK. Shortly before these gatherings, Modi portrayed the scope of the Indian elections as “the largest celebration of democracy globally” and characterized his “historic triumph” as a “victory of democracy” and “victory of the democratic world at large.
From June 13 to June 15, the G7 leaders’ summit will take place in the opulent Borgo Egnazia resort in the Apulia region of Italy. Representatives from Italy, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, the United States, the United Kingdom, and the European Union (EU) attended the yearly summit. A political agreement on a broad agreement to lend $50 billion to Ukraine using interest from Russian sovereign assets frozen following Moscow’s invasion of its neighbor in 2022 served as the centerpiece of the first day’s events.
