India’s real-time payment system, Unified Payments Interface (UPI), has been made available at all of LuLu Group International’s retail locations in the United Arab Emirates. On Thursday, in honour of the 78th anniversary of Indian Independence, A. Amarnath, the Deputy Chief of Mission at the Indian Embassy, completed the first-ever transaction at an Abu Dhabi LuLu hypermarket.
Indian tourists and expatriates can now pay at LuLu stores with their RuPay cards. They can use their UPI-enabled app, such as Gpay, PhonePe, or Paytm, to make payments by scanning the UPI QR code. According to Saifee Rupawala, CEO of LuLu Group International, “the new payment facility will greatly benefit the more than 10 million Indians who travel to the UAE every year, providing convenience and boosting local trade and economy.”
UPI is an instant payment system that allows any participating bank to combine several bank accounts into a single mobile application. It combines different banking functions into one platform to facilitate easy fund transfers, merchant payments, and other services.
The UPI RuPay card service was launched in Abu Dhabi in February by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Sheikh Mohamed. Since then, UPI payment solutions have also been adopted by Al Maya Supermarkets and Mashreq Bank, both located in Dubai.
