Four days after receiving a ban from the Emirates Cricket Board, Pakistan’s hard-hitting batsman Usman Khan, was added to the team on Tuesday for the Twenty20 international series against New Zealand.
Usman, 28, was registered as a player in a United Arab Emirates (UAE) league and finished second in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) last month with 430 runs scored in seven games.
In the United Arab Emirates, Usman worked as a storekeeper and security guard and was a reliable run-scorer in club cricket. In the month following the conclusion of the PSL, he participated in a Pakistan national team training camp and was accused of violating the Emirates Cricket Board’s rules.
During the media conference to announce the squad, Riaz said, “Usman deserved to be selected because he has been scoring runs for the last two to three years. The Pakistan Cricket Board will handle any other issues that may arise.” After taking over as captain last month from Shaheen Shah Afridi, Babar Azam will guide the 17-man team.
Amir had abruptly announced his retirement in 2020 following non-selection in the team but continued to play league cricket worldwide while Wasim retired last year.
