In a private ceremony on Saturday, former New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern married her longtime partner Clarke Gayford after nearly five years of engagement and a postponement due to the coronavirus outbreak.
The couple kept the specifics of the ceremony under wraps. Still, it is said to have taken place at a posh vineyard in the picturesque Hawke’s Bay region, some 325 kilometers (200 miles) from Wellington, the capital of New Zealand.
Only close friends, family, and a few of the 43-year-old Ardern’s former legislative colleagues—including Chris Hipkins, the prime minister who succeeded her—are said to have been invited.
A small number of protestors who had covered a wall outside the venue with several anti-vaccine posters were greeted by police earlier. One protester was also seen with a poster that stated, “Lest we forget jab mandates,” on the outskirts of the property.
The wedding, which was supposed to take place in the southern hemisphere in the summer of 2022, was rescheduled because of Ardern’s government’s COVID-19 rules, which limited gatherings to 100 people. Gayford, 47, and Ardern reportedly started dating in 2014 and became engaged five years later.
