Five Indian Seamen on a Ship Taken Prisoner by Iran Were Freed

Five Indian sailors who were detained by Tehran on a vessel connected to Israel were freed on Thursday and have left Iran, according to the Indian embassy there, marking a significant diplomatic achievement.

The Indian Embassy expressed gratitude to the Iranian authorities for their close cooperation with the Embassy and Indian Consulate in Bandar Abbas when disclosing the specifics of their release.

“This evening, five Indian sailors aboard the MSC Aries were set free and left Iran. MEA official spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal wrote on X, saying, “We appreciate the Iranian authorities’ close coordination with the Embassy and Indian Consulate in Bandar Abbas.”

On April 13, Iran took control of the cargo ship that was associated with Israel, ensnaring 17 Indian citizens.

The container ship, MSC Aries, was taken over by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy close to the Strait of Hormuz. The ship was last observed on April 12th, heading toward the Strait of Hormuz off the coast of Dubai.

Prior to this, on April 18, Ann Tessa Joseph, a native of Thrissur, Kerala, who was one of the 17 Indian crew members aboard the cargo ship “MSC Aries,” which was connected to Israel and taken by Iran on April 13, made a successful return to her home country.

One of the 17 Indian crew members has safely returned to India, according to the Ministry of External Affairs, and the others are also safe. They will be released after fulfilling their contractual obligations.
