The Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC) announced on Wednesday that Emirati astronauts Nora Al Matrooshi and Mohammad Al Mulla have graduated from the 2021 Nasa Astronaut Candidate Class training program during a ceremony conducted at Houston’s Johnson Space Center.
The achievement marks the end of more than two years of rigorous training, which began in January 2022, and qualifies them as fully certified astronauts for future space flights.
The 2021 Nasa Astronaut Candidate Class, dubbed ‘The Flies’, had 10 Nasa candidates and the UAE’s Al Mulla and Al Matrooshi, the latter being the first female Arab astronaut. During the event, each candidate got an astronaut pin to represent their readiness for space missions and contributions to future adventures.
The graduation event was attended by astronaut Dr Sultan Saif Al Neyadi, Minister of State for Youth Affairs, Salem Humaid Al Marri, Director-General, MBRSC, astronaut Hazzaa Al Mansoori, astronauts Office Manager, MBRSC, and Centre staff members.
