According to a statement from the royal palace, the ruling Emir of Kuwait was admitted to the hospital on Wednesday “due to an emergency health problem,” although his status was later stated to be stable.
Sheikh Nawaf Al Ahmad Al Sabah, who is 86 years old, is dealing with health issues, although the state-run Kuna news agency did not go into detail about them in its announcement.
The Emir’s half-brother and intended successor, Crown Prince Sheikh Meshal, is likewise in his 80s. He was nominated when Sheikh Nawaf took over as ruler in 2020.
In 2021, Sheikh Nawaf visited the US for undisclosed medical examinations.
He took the oath of office as emir following the passing of his predecessor, Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Sabah, in 2020.
Over the previous three years, political disagreements between the elected parliament and the appointed administration have characterized Sheikh Nawaf’s mandate, forcing Kuwaitis to cast three ballots.
A few days prior, Sheikh Nawaf had issued an order that resulted in the pardoning of several inmates and the restoration of citizenship for opposition individuals whose rights had been taken away almost ten years prior.
