Climate Minister: UAE fulfills its promise on food security at COP28.

Sustainable agriculture and food security have received “unprecedented global consensus and commitment” from COP28 UAE.

On the last day of the UN Climate Summit in Dubai on Tuesday, Mariam bint Mohammed Almheiri, the UAE’s Minister of Climate Change and Environment and the lead for the COP28 Food Systems, made this statement.

Almheiri summarized the 13-day climate conference for Khaleej Times, saying, “In the first few days alone, the conference catalyzed global action on food security, loss and damage fund, and energy transition – all aligning with the UAE’s vision for a sustainable future.” “UA’s ambitions at COP28 have translated into tangible outcomes,” Almheiri said.

The “COP28 UAE Declaration on Sustainable Agriculture, Resilient Food Systems, and Climate Action” is one important agreement that was reached.

Speaking at the event, Almheiri stated: “152 heads of state and government have signed the Declaration as of right now. They speak for 5.9 billion people, 77% of national governments, 518 million farmers, and 78% of all emissions from agricultural systems. They also provide 73% of the food that we eat.

She continued, “The Declaration will strengthen food systems, reduce global emissions, and help the global fight against hunger and build resilience to climate change.”
